AAPOR is Positioning Itself as Trusted Source for 2020 Election Polling Information

by Josh DeLarosa, Communications Chair
As David Dutwin discussed during his presidential address, AAPOR must improve how it communicates with the public. To do so, the Executive Council, Communications Committee, and Journalist Education Subcommittee have been working with Stanton Communications to prepare for the expected increase in attention to polling during the 2020 election.

Similarly to previous election cycles, AAPOR will develop a set of election resources for the public. AAPOR will also establish a taskforce to evaluate 2020 election polling. New for this election cycle, AAPOR will hold a series of educational events for the general public and journalists. This includes Reddit Ask Me Anything sessions, webinars for journalists, and increased outreach to news organizations.

These activities will be guided by a strategic plan aligned with AAPOR’s mission and values.

As such, the goal of our communications plan will be to:
  • Educate policy makers, the media, and the public at large to help them better understand surveys and survey findings
  • Advocate for the highest standards of ethical conduct for survey and opinion research
  • Encourage and disseminate research and innovations that improve our methods
  • Promote best practices in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting survey data
