Chapter Spotlight: PANJAAPOR

by Krista Jenkins, President
PANJAAPOR is celebrating another great year of events. Our annual spring event took place last May, hosted by Drexel University. Dr. Jana Hirsch (Drexel University School of Public Health) presented information on her research to measure gentrification in Philadelphia and to understand how residents think about and perceive neighborhood change and its effect on their health and well-being.

In December, we held our annual fall event, hosted by Princeton University. Our panel, titled The Promise and Peril of Mixed (Probability and Non-Probability) Samples, featured presentations from Dr. David Dutwin (NORC) and Drs. Krista Jenkins (The FDU Poll) and Ashley Koning (Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling, Rutgers University). Dr. Dutwin spoke about his work at SSRS, which used cutting-edge methodology and weighting techniques for the best use of a) nonprobability samples, and b) hybrid probability and nonprobability samples. Drs. Jenkins and Koning discussed the results of a joint experiment utilizing RDD, online probability samples, and online nonprobability samples at the state level, one of the first ever in-depth experiments testing the effects of both survey mode and type of sample on statewide public opinion polling.

Looking ahead to this spring, we expect to host a panel discussion regarding election polling-- challenges, limitations, opportunities, and how the media uses (and misuses) pre-election public opinion polls. Panelists will include Dave Redlawsk (University of Delaware, former director of the Iowa Poll), and Patrick Murray (Monmouth University Polling Institute). We expect the discussion to be lively and topical! PANJAAPOR and NYAAPOR are also co-hosting the 2020 Young Public Opinion Stars Event on April 28th. Students and young professionals will present their research in a poster format to compete for a cash prize.
