In this interactive presentation, you will learn about the Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis, a framework developed to provide much-needed support for qualitative researchers in analyzing artifacts in combination with interviews.

The presentation will be followed with a brief outline of the problem we all encounter when we combine some form of interviewing with the production of photographs, artifacts, collages, maps or drawings, and the like: the lack of a systematic framework for analysis. You will also learn how the Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis as a framework may redress this issue.

In breakout groups, participants will then have an opportunity to apply the framework on an example from Dr. Brown's research and discuss its benefits and challenges. In the subsequent plenary discussion, we will explain the theoretical and philosophical foundations of the framework followed by key considerations of what makes a "good" Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis.

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • have a critical understanding of a systematic approach to analyzing data from creative data collection methods
  • have gained practical experience in the analysis of visual data
  • feel confident in analyzing visual data generated using innovative research methods
