Speaker: Joe Murphy, Senior Survey Methodologist in RTI International's Survey Research Division

About Joe:MURPHY_Photo.PNG
Joe Murphy is a senior survey methodologist in RTI International’s Survey Research Division. His research focuses on the application of new technologies to improve the quality, relevance, and efficiency of survey research. He investigates optimal designs for multimode data collection platforms and applies data visualization techniques to draw insights from survey data and paradata. Joe’s substantive areas of experience include topics of energy, hospitals and health care, and substance use and mental health. He is also proficient in SAS and R programming and is experienced in the analysis and manipulation of large, complex data sets.

Regardless of the modes uses, length of the data collection period, sample size, or interventions planned, surveys require some level of monitoring to ensure things are going according to plan.  At the most basic level, a table of completes updated throughout data collection can allow researchers to evaluate progress against targets.  As the complexity of the study design increases, other metrics may be needed to evaluate current status and plan future strategies.  The metrics may include response rates, measures of representativity, costs, and data quality indicators.

For studies that use responsive or adaptive designs, daily results can be vital to making decisions that could impact protocols moving forward. At some point, static tables can be overwhelming to monitor, and data visualization can elucidate patterns and trends.  Even static visualizations can become overwhelming if the researcher or supervisor needs to drill down to different levels of detail.  In this case, interactive visualization can allow for custom results to fit a wide range of user needs.

In this webinar, we will discuss design decisions for survey monitoring and selection of the best tools to fit researchers’ needs.  We will discuss how study design, survey mode, success criteria, and established targets play into these design decisions and the options available.  Special attention will be paid to mixed-mode designs and the different needs that may occur between interviewer and self-administered protocols. We will present case studies using RTI International’s Adaptive Total Design (ATD) Dashboard, which is a web-based interactive tool employed across a wide range of surveys.

After attending this webinar, participants will have a deeper insight into survey monitoring options, the benefits of interactive visualization, and tradeoffs between customization and standardization.
