About This Course:

Effective public speakers are successful at conveying their key points in simple, direct, and memorable ways, transporting their audience from one state of knowledge or mindset to another. These speakers have often mastered the art and science (or at least best practices) of public speaking. They know that nearly all talks that “fail” do so before the speaker has ever utters a single word. It is all about preparation – after that delivery is (fairly) easy. In this session we will examine some of the key aspects of public speaking, focusing on the delivery of a conference paper as our running example. We discuss how to best approach and frame a presentation, the many steps in preparation for the talk, and then some keys in the delivery. In doing so we will also touch on topics such as effective slide presentations, vocal command and body language, and how to deal with both exuberant and pesky audience members. Those attending the session will be better prepared by the end of the course to make their next big presentation!

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify techniques for framing and preparing a conference presentation (or other public talk).
  • Describe the importance of vocal command and body language in projecting professionalism and confidence.
  • Define keys to using slides and presentations to support, not substitute for your talk.
