The AAPOR Conference Support Subcommittee invites you to be a part of the team that makes the annual conference a great event for all. We are looking for volunteers to help with many activities. The time commitment varies for each position and you are welcome to sign up for more than one position and/or time slot. All volunteers will wear a special button that identifies you as an AAPOR conference volunteer and ‘go-to’ person. This is a wonderful opportunity for AAPOR members, new and old, to get more involved in AAPOR and to meet other members. No experience or expertise is necessary for any of the positions. The Conference Support Subcommittee will make sure you have all the information you need to handle your assigned tasks. Some volunteer opportunities are listed below, and others will be added as the conference approaches.
Indicate your willingness to be a conference volunteer by checking the box on the registration form. You will be contacted in the spring with more details. For more information please contact Debbie Rexrode at email@example.com or +1-540-661-2735.
The following represent some of the volunteer opportunities available to attendees:
- AAPOR Information Booth Hosts
Provide general information about AAPOR and the annual conference to attendees.
- Short Course Hosts
Ensure short course participants check in at the registration desk and find the room for the course they are attending.
- Session Guides and Monitors
Assist AAPOR staff in providing directions to/from session rooms and other activities and assist the associate conference chair in counting attendees in all concurrent sessions. Note: You are expected to assist before the sessions and during the first 10 minutes of your assigned sessions; your assignment is finished when the counting is complete.
- Poster Session Moderators
Assist the poster presenters and demonstration presenters (as needed), with set up/tear down, help with “traffic flow” during the session and provide general information about the poster session process to attendees.
- Fun Run/Walk Assistants
Help the Conference Support Subcommittee with the Fun Run/Walk, including timing runners, taking photos, etc. Note: Assistants will not be able to participate in the run.
- Speed Networking Assistants
Two speed networking sessions are scheduled for conference attendees so that they may have the opportunity to talk with representatives from companies within the survey research industry. Speed networking assistants will greet participants and monitor scheduled appointments in order to help keep interviews to 15-minute blocks of time.
- The AAPOR Conference Docent Program
Can you remember the first time you attended an AAPOR Annual Conference? If you can, you might recall wishing you knew someone to have dinner with, someone to talk to about the session you just attended or the paper you presented, someone to introduce you to some of our long-time members. In 2012, nearly quarter of our annual conference attendees were first-time attendees. Please consider volunteering some of your time to help a first-time attendee feel like they have attended for years. Each AAPOR Docent will be assigned a group of first-time conference attendees who want to participate in the docent program. We’re hoping lots of experienced AAPORites will lend a hand and get involved in this valuable program, keeping the number of first-time attendees in each group small and personal. Docents will be expected to:
- Contact their assigned colleagues before the conference by phone or email
- Arrive at the conference by Thursday afternoon and attend the Thursday night New Member/All-Chapter Reception to meet your assigned colleagues
- Eat together at one of the AAPOR meals
- And… the rest is up to the group!
There is no expectation of continued commitment after the conference, but we certainly encourage long-term friendships! Individuals participating in the Docent Program will not be matched on any specific substantive areas, but we will try to match you based on geographic region, when possible.
