Membership Research
AAPOR periodically surveys members, former members, and conference attendees to learn more about the benefits and programs that are valued most. More information on past membership research initiatives is provided below.
2007 Member & Former Member Surveys
The 2007 Member and Former Member surveys were conducted by Survey Sciences Group, LLC from November 15, 2007, through January 14, 2008. The surveys were administered by web-CASI with an optional PAPI mode. An initial invitation was distributed to respondents via e-mail, with follow-up by e-mail and postal mail, including two reminders posted to AAPORnet. The Member Survey was sent to all current members as of November 2007 (n=1,836), resulting in a final response rate of 55.4 percent. The Former Member Survey was sent to former members, defined as members of AAPOR in 2005 who did not renew membership in 2006 or 2007 (n=831), resulting in a final response rate of 30.2 percent.

2005 President's Member E-mail Poll
All 2005 AAPOR members with a valid e-mail address (n=1,509) were invited to participate in the President's Member E-mail Poll. An e-mail invitation was distributed by AAPOR's Executive Office, and questionnaires were returned to HarrisInteractive between March 30 and April 14, 2005. Fifty-five percent of those on the e-mail list participated in the survey: 53 percent (796 members) completed the questionnaire and an additional 2 percent (30 members) suspended before completion. HarrisInteractive staff programmed the survey, collected the data, and cleaned the data of duplicates and member ID numbers, before delivering the data files to Belden Russonello & Stewart for analysis.

1996 Member Survey
The 1996 Member Survey was a mail survey conducted using a modified Total Design Method approach. The mailing included the questionnaire, a cover letter from the AAPOR president, and a stamped return envelope (in the U.S only). Non-US members were given the opportunity to reply by fax. Questionnaires and reminders went to all members via postal mail; in addition, two reminders were posted on AAPORnet. With response hovering at the upper 60 percent level, a telephone reminder message brought in a request from an additional 30 members for copies of the questionnaire, resulting in a final response rate of 69 percent. AAPOR gratefully acknowledges the volunteer services of staff and students from Northwestern University Survey Laboratory (reminder telephone calls), Belden and Russonello (data entry), and the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (data analysis).
